To know where you're going, you have to know where you've been.
These church people had baggage. They had deep scars from their sordid past that continued to ache. But their leader wasn't going to let them pretend that it was all okay. He wrote so that they wouldn't gloss over their pain. He wanted them to admit the truth to themselves, by remembering where they came from so that they could fully experience the victory that they were destined to experience. This letter is just as true for Christians today as it was then.
